25th anniversary of the greatest masters and the greatest calls

It was perhaps the most famous call in golf history. In 1986, a quarter century ago, CBS commentator Verne Lundquist watched Jack Nicklaus roll in a crucial birdie putt on the 17th hole at the Masters to take the lead. Lundquist happily proclaimed, "Yes sir!"

That phrase is now inseparable from that putt, that victory, and the Nicklaus legend. No retrospective of the Golden Bear's career will fail to include it. And yet something about that call has been lost to history.

Only minutes before -- 37 minutes to be exact -- on the 15th hole, Nicklaus made an even more important putt. This one was for an eagle, and it caused one of the loudest ovations anyone at Augusta can remember. And in the din of the moment, CBS commentator Ben Wright peered down from his tower and shouted to his audience of millions something that hardly anyone seems to recall:

"Yes sir!"

The Dark Blues prevail for a second consecutive year, this time by the narrowest of margins at Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club.

The 2011 Varsity Match was an eagerly anticipated one. A year ago in South Wales, only one side was backed to take the spoils and indeed went on to do so, but the 122nd instalment of Oxbridge’s golfing history was billed to be a much closer affair from the very early stages of the season. With the Dark Blues continuing their impressive form of last year and reports from the Fens being much more positive this time around, the stage was set for an epic encounter – neither side failed to deliver.

Proceedings began in line with tradition when the two reserves from each side teed it up in Thursday’s Dinner Match, which determines who will be footing the bill for the opulent dinner on Saturday evening. The coolheaded Andrew West and the excitable Hamish Jackson were up against a strong Light Blue pair comprising Cambridge veteran Ben Tolley and freshman Lucas Birrell-Gray. The day began well for Oxford with Hamish Jackson hitting the best 250-yard, relatively straight drive one could ever witness off the second tee, warranting a loud shriek of ‘c’mon!’ from the lofty physiologist. This clearly inspired the Dark Blue pair as they battled hard in a quality match to take a one-up victory. Unfortunately, neither player managed to deliver the one point needed from the afternoon singles session to ensure the Tabs picked up the dinner bill for the sixth consecutive year, with Jackson falling 2/1 and West 4/3. Congratulations to Cambridge, who certainly exploited the fruits of Thursday’s labour when Saturday evening came around.

Whilst the Dinner Match was out on the course, back at the clubhouse news of the draw for the five 36-hole foursomes matches on Friday broke from the captains. The combinations that had come together led to two strikingly crucial contests in the top and bottom games. The top match was taken by Cambridge (Dinsmore and McFarlane) who, with 30 holes of steady play, overcame the promising pair of Jim Mercurio and Robert van Wijk 6&5. The middle three games had maybe more predictable outcomes, with the incredibly strong Cambridge pair of American Ben Wescoe and German Paul Schoenberger looking favourite in game three (8&7), between Oxford’s top pairings in Claudio Consul and Samarth Ghorpade (4&3) in game two, and Alex Gems and Calum Slowther (6&5) in game four.

With the scoreline at two-a-piece, the anchor match was to be all-important. Captain Matthew Wells and freshman David Crummey found themselves three down after 18 holes to opponents Dewhurst and Ramskill, but staged a quite astonishing fight-back post-lunch in which they were four-under for the opening six, and won nine out of 13 holes en route to a 6&5 victory. With the scoreline just one in favour of Oxford at the halfway stage, both sides were hoping for an equally thrilling day’s golf on Saturday, and the singles draw announcement on Friday evening ensured this would be the case. Despite each of the 10 matches promising excitement, there was one game that stood head and shoulders above the rest.

The name Claudio Consul sends shivers down the spine of all Cambridge golfers. With an unblemished seven victories from seven totalling an aggregate 41 holes up, the former Italian and German Amateur Champion has made dismantling Cambridge one of his favourite pastimes since 2008. However, Ben Wescoe, former Captain of Yale University Golf, arrived at Cambridge in October last year playing off a handicap of +3. All season long there was one match up that all had dreamt of – the Consul-Wescoe showdown with Consul’s perfect record on the line. And when it was announced that the captains had both (independently of one another) stationed their biggest warheads at number three, the bar of Deal clubhouse erupted with excitement and the blockbuster match that was so desperately wanted was to become reality.

The match began in quite incredible fashion. With Consul 10ft away for birdie on the second green, Wescoe holed his approach for eagle to move into a 1up lead in a front nine that would see the players exchange five further birdies. The back nine of the morning and the first two holes of the afternoon witnessed Consul storm into a six-up lead, and despite Wescoe’s best efforts the German machine was simply too strong and ‘CC’ stormed to his eighth successive Light Blue scalp. In total, this match was studded with no fewer than 13 birdies and an eagle, and will surely go down as one of the all-time great Varsity duels.

Meanwhile, his foursomes partner Ghorpade was proving that Tab-shoeing is a contagious habit, having caught the bug from Consul the day before. A morning round that saw the Economist shoot three-under par left him eight-up at lunch and in an insurmountable position making it 2-0 Oxford in the singles. In the Captains’ match, Irishmen Andrew Dinsmore sneaked past Matthew Wells 3&2, and when Geordie Ting overcame New College’s Robert van Wijk and David Crummey fell victim to Canadian Louis Caron, the match was absolutely in the balance. Some excellent play from Cambridge’s Secretary Alex Silver was enough to dispatch Oxford’s Treasurer Hugh Upcott Gill, and so with four matches left on the course Cambridge held the initiative.

News broke that Oxford’s teetotaller Tim Hoolahan had converted a five-up lunchtime lead into victory against St. Paul’s companion Charlie Dewhurst to rebalance the match. Shortly after, OUGC Secretary Calum Slowther concluded his match against Paul Schonberger 2&1 to put Oxford into a 7-6 lead with two games remaining. As players, family, old boys, bufties and club members alike descended on the eighteenth hole, all knew the equation was simple: one point from two for Oxford would be enough. Jim Mercurio secured the first half of the requirement by two-putting from 30ft on the final green for par. Then, when Alex Gems reached the 18th tee one-up with one to play, Oxford knew that the 122nd University Match was theirs. Scenes of utter jubilation ensued as the Dark Blues made it two consecutive wins and three wins out of three in Varsity matches at Deal.

A fairytale ending this was in so many ways. Claudio Consul’s remarkable Oxford career climaxing with victory over the toughest of opponents aided another achievement that will surely never be repeated. Not many captains are fortunate enough to lead out a side on their home course, but for Matthew Wells the 2011 Blues victory is his second at home club Royal Cinque Ports having captained the successful Divots outfit there in 2009. Other leavers that will be sorely missed next year are Hugh Upcott Gill, who has been an OUGC Committee stalwart for the past two seasons, and Tim Hoolahan and Hamish Jackson who for three years have also been rocks of Oxford Golf.

A spectacular way to end a cracking season. And with seven of the 12 Blues returning for service next year after back-to-back Varsity triumphs, the future for Oxford University Golf Club looks very bright indeed.

After a gazpacho starter the assembled winners of the Masters, including Jose Maria Olazabal on his return to the event, will follow with paella, then beef tenderloin with manchego cheese and tortilla.

The desserts on offer include Spanish apple pie and Mickelson's one disappointment is that Ballesteros, still battling brain cancer, has not been able to travel and enjoy the meal. It was the first of Ballesteros' two Masters wins in 1980 that truly inspired the American. Nine at the time, Mickelson said to his mother: "I want to win that tournament. I want to be like that and win this event."

CBS SPORTS executive producer Lance Barrow announced today that The Masters will be available in 3-D on certain HD flat screen televisions. Barrow's remarks were originally cited in the New York Daily News and thought to be an April Fools hoax. However, subsequent interviews with Barrow, Jim Nantz and Nick Faldo confirmed the report. 3-D Glasses used to view James Cameron's avatar will work with the proper television. Also marking one of the lenses of ray ban type sunglasses ORANGE will bring home the new technology. 1970's type spectator view finders will also be adequate, Burrows proclaimed!!! Discovery and History Channel are slated to air 3-D programming this fall.

The Dinner Match took place in calm and fine weather conditions on the thursday. The Oxford pair of Pinnegar and Ghorpade would get off to a solid start in the morning foursomes, leading throughout. However, the resurgent Cambridge pair of Hult and Rosenberg took it down the last. Oxford would prevail 1 up, taking a vital lead into the afternoon singles matches.
Ghorpade would lead Oxford in the afternoon and surged to an 8&7 victory with some consistent quality golf. This sealed the dinner match, leaving Pinnegar to complete the sweep of matches with a 3&2 win.
The foursomes started in benign conditions at Porthcawl on Friday morning. Nevertheless, the course was firm, fast and difficult. Strong play from Oxford's top order would see them take the first two games comfortably. Cambridge's fourth pair, Dinsmore annd Selvay, had eased into a solid lead at lunch and got Cambridge's first point on the board in the afternoon, with a 6&5 win. The third match would prove crucial. Having been close to all square for most of the match, Consul and Stephen would hole some crucial putts to win the match 3&2. Much rested on the anchor match. Cambridge would win the match 3&2, to stay in touch in the foursomes.
Friday evening saw the traditional cocktail party hosted by the society. The evening was enjoyed by all, and the draw setting up a set of intruiging matches.

Having recieved a barrage of rain the previous afternoon and evening, the course became much softer for the singles. This led to some excellent golf all round. Having been 7up at lunch, Consul would get the first point on the board for Oxford with a dominant 9&8 win. McPhail would swiftly follow suit with a 7&6 victory. Much rested on the Captain's match. It would swing both ways, but Oxford Captain, Stephen, would win 2&1. When Twiney signed off his long serving and distinguished Oxford career with a fine 7&6 win, Oxford only needed a point to secure victory. Oxford fresher Gems would seal the match for Oxford with an excellent 4&3 win with some outsanding golf. The final Oxford point would come from the anchor match from Matt Wells, with a 4&3 win. The overall match finished 9 - 6 to Oxford.
A special congratulations to Oxford players, McPhail (in his last match for Oxford) and Consul, who took their varsity match records to 6 wins out of 6

Tiger Woods has been working with swing coach Hank Haney on the driving range at Isleworth since Sunday, the Daily News has confirmed through several sources, which would indicate that the embattled golfer is on course to play the Masters, a major he has won four times, April 8-11.
The Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill two weeks earlier could serve as a possible tuneup.
It has been reported that Haney has rented a home in Augusta the week of the Masters, although that would not in itself be a guarantee that Woods is playing. Meanwhile, there is speculation that Woods' caddie, Steve Williams, could be fired. Williams recently appeared on New Zealand television discussing his boss' indiscretions. Williams said on the telecast that he was angry at Woods over the scandal and would have spoken up had he been privy to Woods' extramarital transgressions.

The 16-year-old Italian national golf team standout, who vaulted to the top of the amateur world rankings with a win at the British Amateur and a tie for 13th at the British Open -- plans to play the Masters as an amateur in April. He will be the youngest-ever contestant in that tournament, just as he was the youngest-ever (and first Italian) winner of the British Amateur.

Manassero, who friends call “Manny” (after an Italian cartoon character) has been on the kind of ride that can only lead to one place.
Manassero said that he will turn pro after the Masters and take advantage of the seven allowed sponsor’s exemptions on the European Tour.
“I really want to live the pro life,” he said in a phone interview from his home in the Northeastern Italian city of Verona, less than two hours from Milan.
His parents are supportive of the decision, as they have been since he started golf at age 4 and through his whirlwind last three years, starting at age 14 when he was selected for the Italian National Golf Team. It was there that Manassero began working with coach Alberto Binaghi, a veteran of at least eight European Tour school qualifiers over a 20-year playing career.

“My parents used to leave me alone - they didn’t want to press me and they helped let my golf game grow,” Manassero said. (lesson for WIE WIE)
Manassero’s breakthrough victory came at the 2007 European Internationals, where he won the 16-and-under division. For once in the days since the Woods story emerged, another subject dominated conversation among golfers when the partnership between the Seve Ballesteros Foundation and Cancer Research UK was announced in London. Lee Westwood, Paul McGinley, Tony Jacklin, Bernard Gallacher attended to give their reminiscences of the Spaniard and so did Billy Foster, who caddied for Seve for a number of years. Foster was the star of the show.

Again and again, warm, affectionate laughter rang around the hotel room where the function took place. Laughter at Ballesteros's English, his mannerisms, his humour. Most of all laughter and admiration at his remarkable skill as a golfer. If ever a man was lionised, Seve was on this occasion.
The sight of an emotional Olazabal and a Ballesteros who did not look as well as he did when he had appeared in that BBC TV documentary by Peter Alliss had the audience in London in tears as it had had so many in Sheffield.

How sad that two men, each the best golfer in the world at different times, could be in such trouble at the same time. While Ballesteros was fighting a brain tumour and trying to raise money to fund research into cancer, the current world No 1, just named Athlete of the Decade by the Associated Press in the US, was in hiding and in disgrace.

It was not long ago that Ballesteros was fit and well and Woods was conquering the world. Ballesteros was taken ill in October 2008 and Woods's stunning fall, the biggest story in the history of golf, began in the early hours of the morning of November 27th.
In the aftermath of the ceremony in London several questions came to mind. How does Phil Mickelson feel about all this? Mickelson has had his own family troubles to deal with this year. Both his wife and his mother have cancer. But with each day that passes it’s as if he and Woods are on a see-saw. The more Woods, once the hero, falls, the more Mickelson, once laughed at by his rival, rises.
"What is easy to understand" Jack McCallum, the American sportswriter, noted, "is that with the exception of the tabloids, the artificially enhanced, show-me-the-money mistresses and the phalanx of attorneys - no one stands to gain more from Tiger's fall than Lefty, his eternal foil."

The contrast between Woods and Mickelson was always considerable just as was the contrast between Woods and Ballesteros these past days. Ballesteros engaged with people; Woods seemed to regard them as intruders into his world. Ballesteros could be bad tempered, though not so bad as Woods. Billy Foster remembered him being so angry at a shot that he took a bite out of the grip of a club. Ballesteros wore his heart on his sleeve. Woods appeared to have no heart.
For these and a host of other reasons, tears were shed for Seve and his plight in that London hotel on Monday night. How many tears have been shed for Woods?

Jesper Parnevik hit Tiger Woods where it hurts yesterday with the strongest condemnation yet from one of his peers.
Parnevik, the Swedish golfer who introduced Woods to his then-nanny, Elin Nordegren, wished Wednesday he could take it all back.
"I really feel sorry for Elin since me and my wife were at fault for hooking her up with him,""We probably thought he was a better guy than he is. I would probably need to apologize to her."
Parnevik added that next time Nordegren should use "a driver rather than a 3-iron. " As more of Woods' dalliances became public, the lothario of the links issued a statement on his Web site yesterday apologizing for unspecified "transgressions" and asking that his privacy be respected.
"It's a private thing of course," Parnevik said. "But when you are the guy he is, the world's best athlete, you should think more before you do stuff ... and maybe not 'Just do it,' like Nike says."
Nordegren began working as an au pair for Parnevik and his wife, Mia, who live in Woods' Isleworth development, in 2001. He considers her a little sister.

Losing to the Americans in the Presidents Cup was frustrating enough. But for Australian Robert Allenby, losing his singles match to Anthony Kim was too much to bear.
Allenby referred to an unconfirmed report — strongly denied by Kim — that the 24-year-old had been out late Saturday night.
"Maybe we should all go out 'til 4 a.m. and show up and shoot 6 under," Allenby said.

He's the current John Daly," Allenby said, "He is the loosest cannon on that team."
Kim said he went to his room soon after the team's dinner Saturday night.
"I hope that was a joke," he said of Allenby's comments.
"I was in tip-top shape."
Kim's attitude had been something of an issue for the American team.
Earlier in the week, U.S. captain Fred Couples had words with Kim about his behavior. Couples said Sunday that he'd been "tough" with Kim.
"Not just me, everyone in the team was," Couples said, without identifying Kim's indiscretions.
Couples did say, however, that Kim was the least frequent visitor to the American team room, preferring to spend time with friends.
"You've got to understand, he's 24 years old," Couples said. "He's younger than a lot of the guys. He's not going to want to hang out with the wives or with Kenny Perry and I."

As for Allenby, he admitted his words were spoken in frustration.
"I'm just pissed off that I lost to him," he said. "Maybe I should've gone out with him."
Kim had some different advice for Allenby.
"He needs to go practice a little bit."

MARINE LAYER WARNING IS IN EFFECT

Indian Summer has been supplanted by a west coast marine layer causing havoc for golfers and staff alike. Chain Saw Alley was closed on Friday as rivers of water flowed across fairways creating new lakes on the backnine and turning traps to quicksand. Chuck Greenhorn had to be pumped out of the fairway bunker on number 17 and exclaimed:'I've never sunk so low.' Anne Bolynn whilst rolling the tenth green caused a tsunami that ripped a swath across the 9th fairway leaving tonnes of gravel in its wake. Faun's clearcutting around 15 tee precipitated a mud slide in the greenside bunker.

However, it was business as usual at Glenn Fidditch as members were encouraged to use 4x4's instead of golf carts as long as they stuck to the pick up paths. A gaggle of wild turkeys chased seagulls from the mountain venue and will be the main dish on Wednesday's Member's Night.

When and if the mountain top links ever closes, the Czar and naturalist Ranger Rick have ordered new signage!

YANG OUT FOR BLOOD at President's Cup

PGA champion Y.E. Yang arrived at the Presidents Cup with a bloodshot right eye. Not streaked with pink, but rather a dark red blot toward the inside corner.
He said it was a blood vein that popped and that it was nothing serious.
Yang also knows how it happened. Attribute it to the price of celebrity from being the guy who took down Tiger Woods.
"Since the PGA Championship, it's been a tiresome two months," Yang said. "I'm not saying it was unpleasant - it was very enjoyable - but it was a long, long schedule and I was out of my routine. And that's why I got a little stressed out. One of my veins popped."
Yang said it burst about five days ago, and it would take about two weeks to heal.
"It's getting to where it's the grossest right now," he said. "But it will be better."

USA Captain, Fred Couples says he will issue surgical eye patches to any Americans matched against Yang this week until the blood has dissipated. 'This is San Francisco, you know'..... In a related story Greg Norman will not comment on whether his black eye was caused by Chis Evert's backhand!!

With just days before the International Olympic Committee's decision on the inclusion of golf and rugby sevens in the Olympics for 2016, there may be a slight fly in the ointment. Is there a suitable course in Rio or Brazil to handle a major golf event? According to a two-time major winner, the answer is no. "There are not any in Rio right now," Angel Cabrera said when asked about golf courses that could handle the Olympics. Cabrera went on to say that there may be some logistical challenges for Brazil to host golf as an Olympic sport. "They would probably have to build (a course)," Cabrera said. If a course had to be built, Rio's Olympic budget could go up as much as $6 million. Stands to reason that golf will not be voted in, hence the selection of Rio as the 2016 venue. Ironic that Chicago lost its bid after baseball was dissed!!!

The 18-hole course, El Corso Publico, boasts 18 holes which can be stretched to nearly 300 feet. While relatively flat, E.C.P. boasts of many doglegs as well as hazards unique to Rio, including a bucking horse, a bear and a wishing well.El Corso's course superintendant confesses that there will be some difficulty changing hole locations day to day, and that a re-routing may be necessary since the traditional 18th hole has players hitting up a ramp and into a black hole where their ball is forever lost."Open Doctor" Rees Jones is in negotiations to help with a remodel of the course, and said via a spokesman that he is "excited about the challenge of ruining a course that, on the surface, appears to already be ruined."

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland(AP) Rory McIlroy birdied the last two holes on the Old Course at St. Andrews for a 7-under 65 and a share of the lead at the halfway stage of the Dunhill Links Championship.
The 20-year-old from Northern Ireland made a 15-foot birdie putt at the ``Road Hole'' 17th, then drove the green at the famous 357-yard closing hole and two-putted from 40 feet.
He was at 11-under 133 with Richie Ramsay of Scotland and Michael Hoey of Northern Ireland. Ramsay, who only got in the tournament when fourth-ranked Paul Casey pulled out last week, shot 66, also on the Old Course.
Hoey had a 66 at Carnoustie.

Carnoustie's Championship course has hosted seven British Opens, including Padraig Harrington's 2007 victory over Sergio Garcia. It was also, of course, the site of Jean Van de Velde's collapse in 1999. For a look at Carnoustie's Open History, click here.
The course's primary defense -- the wind -- is wildly unpredictable. From one day to the next, the gales can turn, morphing an eminently playable hole into a nightmare. 'Tis nae wind, nae golf, the Scots like to say. That's seldom a concern at Carnoustie, where 'tis always wind. In July, when the British Open is played, it typically gusts from the southwest, with six holes -- Nos. 1, 4, 6, 7, 11 and 17 -- playing into its teeth. Things can get really nasty when the wind also blows from the east.

Chain Saw's Lee Mazzing fired a sizzling 70 at Fox Hrb’r last week to win the inaugural President’s cup presented by Wendy’s. On a course reknowned for hosting both President’s Bush’s and Bill Clinton Mazzing was undaunted by the Scottish and Green Party Presidents in his fourball. Special advisor and right hand man Fischer Taylor was runner-up in the event with a 78 including two quadruple bogies. The Scottish President set the new Commander in Chief record eking out Bill Clinton’s questionable 84. The contingent was protected by the Island Secret Service. After the award’s ceremony, Mazzing proclaimed: ‘I was kinda hoping for the President’s knee brace and not his cup.’

LEFTY'S BAG OF TRICKS

A lot of golfers on the PGA Tour use custom-made clubs, but Phil Mickelson's 18° Callaway hybrid is truly unique "This is a special club I actually made, taking the back part of the hybrid out so that I can open it way up and get through that thick rough."
No other player on Tour has one, although a few Callaway staff players have tried one at the company's headquarters in Carlsbad, Calif.
But don't hold your breath hoping that Callaway is going to make a version of the club available anytime soon.

NEW FALL BLADES BY MIZUNO

Among players who demand workability and feel, Mizuno's forged irons have always been well regarded. This fall, the company is set to release irons that not only cater to purists, but to golfers looking for more forgiveness and game-enhancement features too.

Chuck Couch, Mizuno's director of marketing, says of the MP-68 forged blades: "This is a club that golfers expect from Mizuno."
By studying the vibrations and sound created at impact, Mizuno has tried to make a muscleback blade with even better sound and feel. Made from milled carbon steel, weight has been removed from non-critical areas of the MP-68 near the heel, toe, and top of the hosel, then repositioned in the back-toe area. The result, according to the company, is a sweetspot that's lower in the face along with a neutral ball flight preferred by many accomplished players. And yes, the grooves in the MP-68 irons conform with the new USGA regulations.
The MP-68 irons will be available with several different custom shafts, but come standard (3-PW) with True Temper Dynamic Gold shafts ($899) or Project X shafts ($999).

The new MP-58 irons were designed to combine the forgiveness of a full cavity back with the workability, feel and compact size of a classic muscleback.
To achieve that goal, Mizuno engineers got crafty. They positioned a lightweight piece of titanium in a pocket behind the hitting area of the forged carbon steel heads. During the forging process, as the steel cools, it contracts around the titanium to create the feel of one solid piece of metal. Because only 11 grams of titanium are required to fill the area that would have needed 20 grams of steel, Mizuno could then reposition nine grams of discretionary weight to make the MP-58 irons more forgiving and slightly more stable on off-center hits.
A standard set of MP-58 irons (3-PW) will retail for about $1,000 and come with True Temper Dynamic Gold shafts
